Meet Our Interns Blog Series: Yash Sethi

My oldest memory is one of my family members tinkering with objects as they try to fix them. I grew up in a household surrounded by engineers. It was not uncommon to find my brother or my parents disassembling the TV set or the refrigerator on a Sunday afternoon in an effort to repair them. My whole family did not think it extraordinary to take apart an object and put it back together. I admired the way they used their knowledge to tackle problems, whether it was locating an issue in the circuit board or determining if a transformer was required. Every new job was like solving a brand new puzzle. The fact that we rarely had to send something to a repair shop was a source of inspiration for me.

It was this inspiration that motivated me to learn how things function; and though I did not always understand how things worked, I found that screwdrivers, pliers, and mechanics in general fascinated me. It was always interesting to watch people repair and build things.

My innate curiosity and desire to continually learn prompted my pursuit of a career in Mechanical Engineering. As a result, I journeyed miles away from the metropolis of Mumbai, where I grew up, to the small town of West Lafayette in Indiana. At Purdue University, I gained experience in material science, data analysis, and problem solving through coding and engineering tools. My experiences varied from building robots and electric vehicles to finding marketing solutions for local businesses. It dawned on me that, irrespective of the nature of a problem or the scale of the place I was living in, each new issue required a new innovative solution, and that is what excited me the most.

After reading enFocus’s mission, I knew I would have the opportunity to work in an environment where I could use my engineering skills to find solutions to complex problems. Additionally, the opportunity to work with the diverse team enFocus attracts catered to my inquisitive mind and desire to seek new perspectives.

As I continue to explore potential careers, I am hopeful of opportunities to not only grow and learn but also to feel content and take pride in the solutions I engineer. I am excited for a career where I take apart a problem and find a solution on a Sunday afternoon, just as my family used to.
