Meet Our Fellows Blog Series: Josie Lee
If there was a cliff with a group of people falling off of it, the medical team would rush to the bottom of the cliff to treat the fallen while the public health professionals would hurry to the top of the cliff to stop the people from falling off in the first place.
When I heard this story in my first public health course as a freshman at the University of Michigan, it left such a strong impression on the power of prevention and addressing health and problems from a population point of view. When I realized that there were ways to creatively think about issues in this way to make more meaningful impact for more people, I was hooked!
After my freshman year of college, I volunteered at Grace Counseling, a non-profit psychological clinic in Colorado. During my time there, I realized how much I enjoyed helping with the administrative aspects of the organization to support the therapists in helping patients more effectively. I realized that impact is important but to be able to carry out that impact for more people, business had to support it.
So, I returned to school and applied for a business minor.
This intersection of business and impact carried me through my academic studies, and I learned more about how one supported the other. As, I started searching for a career for after graduation, I wanted to work for an organization at these crossroads.
