Meet Our Fellows Blog Series: Sheng Ang
I would guess that many STEM and IT students dream of working in a big tech company—Apple, Amazon, Google, Netflix, you name it! However, for most people, even landing that first job fresh out of university is a huge ordeal—and being an international student definitely adds to the challenge. Fortunately, I found a company that values diversity while offering innovative project work and first-rate professional development.
I was born and raised in Malaysia, an absolutely gorgeous country sandwiched between Thailand and Singapore in Southeast Asia. After attending a 2+2 transfer program and ultimately graduating from Western Michigan University in May 2021, I received a Bachelor’s Degree in Data Science with a minor in Data Analytics.
For many international students, finding a job can be difficult because—in short—companies have to work through a lot more red tape to bring on international hires. For this reason, I developed a true appreciation for companies that value diversity and inclusion in their workplace. This led me to enFocus.
My coworkers at enFocus come from a variety of academic, professional, and cultural backgrounds. While at first, this might seem like it would cause challenges in team settings, I have found that working on a team of people with diverse experiences has made us stronger. By putting together high-achieving, talented people with a variety of perspectives, we are able to drive innovation in the South Bend-Elkhart region in ways that continue to amaze me.
It has only been a few months since I began working at enFocus, but I am so appreciative of the opportunities I have been given. Day in and day out, I get to work on meaningful projects with teammates and partners that value fresh thinking and innovative ideas. I get to make a real difference in my community.
From the bottom of my heart, I am absolutely grateful that enFocus has accepted me as an Innovation Fellow. I cannot wait to see how much more of an impact my team and I can make in this region!
