Alex and business partner Ellen, discuss the ups and downs of launching a business with eager high school students in a local entrepreneurship program this past Fall.

As many established businesses are struggling in the midst of the current economic downturn, some might think trying to advance a startup is not very rational. However, my co-founder, Ellen and I believe the economic downturn amplifies a very real opportunity for our startup, Digital Leader. These uncertain times have reinforced our commitment to Digital Leader and our efforts to continue solve a problem-- improving student digital literacy to provide much needed technical talent to industry to positively impacting society as well as the economy.

We were recently honored to be one of a handful of Indiana ventures invited to pitch in the final round of Elevate Ventures Nexus Statewide competition this month. We spent weeks preparing, investing 30+ hours refining a pitch that had already allowed us to successfully raise $45,000 in the regional competition! We were ready to concisely present a 10 slide pitch in a just few short minutes and in a new virtual pitch format. Our presentation went well and we felt confident, unfortunately we learned Digital Leader was not selected to receive additional funding.

While disappointed of course, such is the path of any entrepreneurial venture (ups and downs!). And Ellen and I feel thankful for yet another experience that strengthened not only our pitch, but also our resolve to accomplish our mission with Digital Leader.

For these, and many other reasons, I remain very thankful for my cofounders, supporters, and the startup support that South Bend Elkhart region provides to young professionals like myself.
